Medieval Linen Tunic “Prince Gilderoy”
Long Linen XIII Century Knights Tunic
Every merchant and prince knows not to wear his best clothes while travelling. There is a fine art to dressing yourself in a way that is modest and appears care free, but still demands respect, and that was something that Prince Gilderoy understood from a young age.
Our “Prince Gilderoy” tunic is long, flattering, yet simple, making it the perfect layer for your character’s attire. Made from our 100% flax linen, it is perfect for hot and cold climates alike, as linen is renowned for its ability to wick sweat as well as insulate. It is fancy enough to be worn as an outer-layer, but plain enough that it could also be just another layer under your travelling coat.
This style of tunic was very common in historical texts, often being worn by people of higher status due to the length. Materials were very expensive and fabric looms were much shorter than they are today, meaning that longer garments required more complex patterns and much more time to create than shorter ones. Frivolous use of fabric was something that can be observed very much in the XIV century, where people with money would go as far as to simply hang fabric from their sleeves to show how they could afford to waste fabric! Thus, we imagine this tunic to be worn by someone of middle-high status, such as a merchant, nobleman or travelling royalty.
The silhouette of this tunic is incredibly flattering and is enough to make basically anyone look important. From the waist it flares outward and goes almost to your ankles, with a split in the middle of both the front and the back to allow for easy walking (and to also imply you’re rich enough to own a horse). The long hem means it flows fantastically as you walk, creating movement and drawing the attention of everyone around you. It has a rounded neckline, gores under the armpit for ease of movement (in case you suddenly find yourself in a gentlemanly duel), and tapered sleeves that finish with a slight split that make them easy to flip up and keep out of your food during feasts.
This garment is well constructed and expertly finished. We have trimmed the whole collar, bottom hem and sleeves in an ArmStreet exclusive trim, created by our team of talented designers. They have taken inspiration from geometric shapes and motifs in the famous Maciejowskie Bible (also known as the Crusader, or Morgan Bible) to create something new and interesting that pays tribute to this garments historical origins. This is a trim only available at ArmStreet so you will not find it in any other stores. We also have a version of this tunic in cotton if you are looking for something a little bit less breathable but more durable.
